Both Jacques and Gillette were executed for the murder of their daughter's husband ( Julien Latouche ).
Executed by being hanged, strangled on the cross of St Andrew and broken on the wheel with a metal bar.
He and his wife, Gillette Bonne killed their daughter, Isabelle's husband, Jean DeLaTouche who was drunk and beat their daughter
Note: Jacques and his wife, Gillette were hanged for the murder of their son in law, Julein LaTouche. The execution was held in the city square in front of the church. Their daughter, Isabelle, had to witness the execution of her parents as her part in the murder. The minor children: Jeanne and Nicolas were put in the guardianship of the church following the execution.

Jacques Bertault and Gilette Baune, his wife, and their daughter Isabelle were convicted of having intentionally poisoned and killed Isabelle's husband, Julien Latouche, and are sentenced as follows: ?Jacques Bertault and Gilette Baune...the Bertaults were [each] to be removed from their Quebec prisons by the executeur~de~le~haute justice [the public executioner], brought before the city's parish church, both with ropes around their necks and burning torches in their
hands. He, Bertault, ?nud en chemise? and she, Baune, also ?nue en chemise?, but from the shoulders to the waist, and there, kneeling, to beg for God's and the King's forgiveness for the crimes which they had commined: moreover Bertault was sentenced to be strangled on a croix St Andre, which was to be placed on a scaffolding set up for that purpose in the main square of the Upper City, and then to have both arms and legs broken by sharp blows from an iron rod: also condemned Baune to be present at the execution of her husband, and to be hanged and strangled in a gallows which was also to have been built for that purpose in the said place.
Ordered further that after the execution of Bertault, his body was to be brought on the 'wheel' to the Public Square at Cap aux~Diamants, to serve as an example, and, in consideration of the [Youthful] age of the said Isabelle Bertault [She was only 13 1/2 yedrs old], and in good faith, [the Conseil] sentenced [Isabelle] Bertault to pay a reasonable fine in the stated form and manner,and to assist at the execution of her father and her mother. Also sentenced Bertault, Baune and Isabelle, jointly, to a fine of 60 livres {about $12.00] to be applied, half to the Recollets to pray
for the rest of the soul of the said Julien Latouche and to pay the [court] expenses, the balance of their belongings already obtained and yet to be confiscated for the King, and obligated the Consiel to return to Nicolas and Jeanne Bertault, minor children of the said Jacques Bertault and Gilette Baune, the remaining half of the fine, together with the said confiscation.

a) 'Nud en chemise', or more correct1y written: nud, en chemise' simply means that the prisoner was to be executed while naked except for a shirt or shift of somekind. In Gilette Baune?s case, ?nue en chemise' or more correctly written, ?nue, en chemise,? simply meant that she was also to be executed while naked except for a shift or shirt covering her shoulders to her waiSt
b) A croix St Andre was a cross shaped like an X similar to the one on which he was martyed in about 70 AD.
c) The practice of breaking the limbs on a wheel was, appropriately enough, referred to as breaking on the wheel and referred to an instrument of torture where the victim?s arms and legs were stretched along the spokes and his limbs broken by blows from an iron bar.
d) Although it might not seem as if he had been spared very much suffering here, the appropriae officials had apparently sought to have Bertault's right arm broken by a swift blow from an iron bar before being strangled and having his other three limbs broken after.
