In 1897, the Kingdom of Galicia was at one time a portion of Austria-Hungary that later became part of the Kingdom of Poland and eventually the independent nation of Poland. Its southern border is formed bay the Carpathian Mountains and present-day Slovakia. Many wars throughout the 1800s and early 1900s moved borders quite often.
