NameFrançois TARDIF dit CHAUFOURNIER
Misc. Notes
From an email of Ed Galvin describing the descendants of François JOSSE.

From a letter to Ed Galvin from Stephen White:

Nevertheless, I hope that
the "several days driving around Nova Scotia" may include a visit to
Louisbourg. A day spent there would be a day well spent indeed. The
fortress and a substantial portion of the city have been reconstructed
in the most authentic manner possible. what's more, both you and I had
ancestors who lived there. In your Case it is the family of François
Dardy dit Chaufournier and Marguerite Dufaux who is of interest.
François and Marguerite's daughter Marie-Marguerite was, as you should
recall, Edward McDonald's mother--in-law. Just in the last few weeks I
have been examining the notarial records of Louisbourg, and in them I
found a deed whereby François Dardy's heirs sold a lot of lard in
Louisbourg, July 29, 1752. Something I found most interesting is the
fact revealed by this deed that Jean-Baptiste Dardy, François's only
surviving son, was at that time a soldier serving in the garrison of
the fortress. Jean-Baptiste's nom de guerre, mentioned in the deed,
was La Moustache. The parcel of land was on the corner of the Rue de
France and the Rue de 1'Etang in Louisbourg, fronting thirty-five feet
on the former, and sixty on the latter. My examination of the notarial
records is far from complete, and there are surely other fascinating
items in them.
