Misc. Notes
From Stephen White:

30) Charles Poirier, son of Louis Poirier and Cecile Mignot, born at Beaubassin about 1721, first married in his native parish, on February 8, 1746, Marguerite Chiasson, daughter of Jean-Baptiste Chiasson and Madeleine Boudrot, and again in the same place, on November 15, 1747, Marguerite
Vigneau, daughter of Maurice Vigneau and Marguerite Comeau. Charles and his second wife Marguerite settled at Port Toulouse shortly after the treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. According to a tradition as told by Edme Rameau de Saint-Pere, Charles hid with his family in 1758 on an island in Bras d'Or lake "where we killed all the dogs for fear of making noise". After a decade or so, Charles settled at Arichat, where he occupied a piece of land that was later expropriated for the construction of the city hall, at the bequest of his daughter Eulalie. He is the ancestor of the Poiriers of D'Escousse and the "Andriens" of Cheticamp.

An 1817 petition for Crown land indicates that Charles Poirier cameto Isle Madame about 1757, and was at Little D'Escousse, Poirierville, as early as 1795.

Further:
In 1817 Charles Poirier petitioned Governor Ainslie, asking title to the lot at Little Descousse on which he had lived the past 22 years. The lot was adjoining land of Nastasie [Anastasie] Poirier, widow of the late Peter Poirier. Charles was age 75, a native of Cape Breton, and had lived 60 years on Isle Madame. He had nine children all living with him. Charles Poirier was granted 58 acres of land in D'Escousse, Lot #5 Little Goulet, by Crown lease from the Government of Cape Breton on 21 Apr. 1817. This land was later passed by his son Charles to grandsons Edward and Simon Poirier (Richmond Deeds O:396).

Charles Poirier immediately precedes Edward McDonald in the 1811 census indicating that they were living near each other. The census shows a male over age 60 [Charles], one male and three
females between 14 and 60, and five males and one female under 14. Nine of the eleven people in the household were unmarried indicating that one of the females over age 14 was probably Charles' wife. Charles Poirier owned eight Cattle and twelve sheep, and was listed as a fisherman.

In the 1813 Militia Roll for the Seventh Military Division, Charles is shown as age 80 years, born on Cape Breton and residing in D'Escousse. With him in the household were one woman, six boys
and three girls.
