Legrand, Nicole

Nicole Legrand was born about 1648 in the parish of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, the daughter of Nicolas Legrand and Anne Duplessis. After her father's death, she left for Canada in 1669 at about age 21, taking with her goods worth an estimated 400 livres for her dowry.

On 22 October 1669, Nicole married François Noël at Sainte-Famille (it is also listed at Québec City) and was given the King's Gift of 50 livres. Both spouses signed the marriage contract drawn up 13 October by notary Becquet. Francois was born about 1644 in Chiré-en-Montreuil (arrondissement and diocese of Poitiers), Poitou, the son of Pierre Noel and Elisabeth Augustin. He was confirmed 23 March 1664 in Québec City and can be found in the 1666 census as the indentured servant of Gabriel Gosselin and in the 1667 census as the indentured servant of Jacques Roy. François and Nicole settled at Sainte-Famille, Île d’Orléans, where son Philippe was baptized 28 December 1670, followed by Catherine dite Marguerite, baptized 14 November 1672 at Québec City.

In 1672, Nicole and her husband accused neighbor Fille du Roi Anne Bardet of leading a scandalous life. Anne sought redress for what she felt were false and malicious accusations, and on 26 January 1673, Nicole and Francois were forced to agree to an act drawn up by notary Becquet, retracting their accusations and restoring Anne's honor and good name.

Son François was baptized 17 September 1675 at Sainte-Famille, followed by twins Pierre and Claire, baptized 20 September 1677. Sadly, Claire was buried 07 October 1677 at Saint-Paul. The family then settled at Saint-Laurent, ile d'Orléans, where Marguerite was baptized 21 November 1679, followed by Ignace (18 May 1681), Michel (28 March 1683), Jean-Baptiste (30 September 1685) and Madeleine (12 May 1687). Sadly, Jean-Baptiste was buried 12 January 1691 and Marguerite died 23 February 1691 at the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec.

On 09 September 1707, François Noël "gave himself" to son Ignace, in return for care for the rest of his life. Nicole Legrand died 05 October 1713 and was buried the next day at Saint-Laurent. François Noël died and was buried 26 May 1725 at Saint-Laurent.
