Jacques Hertel (1603-1651)
Jacques Hertel [Sieur] de la Fresnière
is the son of Nicolas Hertel and Jeanne Miriot. He was born in Fécamp, in Normandy. We do not know his date of birth but some claim that he would have been born in 1603. Recruited by Samuel de Champlain, he arrived in Québec in 1626, as a soldier. We have no proof of this fact which prompts some to argue that he was perhaps in the country by 1615.
During the English occupation of the Kirke brothers, from 1629 to 1632, Jacques Hertel lived with the Algonquins. In 1633, with the help of the Amerindian tribes, Jacques Hertel brought to the colonists an essential aid to the survival of the French living on the coasts of the St. Lawrence. He rendered valuable services in its relations between the French and the Native as an interpreter and a mediator. He served as interpreter for the Jesuits in 1633.
No doubt to thank him for his contributions, the Compagnie des Cent-Associés, granted him on December 16, 1633 land measuring 200 arpents, at Trois-Rivières. Jacques Hertel was one of the first inhabitants and settler of Trois-Rivières. On April 5, 1644, Jacques de La Ferté, abbot of Saint Madeleine, granted him land known as the Hertel fiefdom. From 1647 to 1648, Jacques Hertel was the syndic of the “Habitants”.
On August 23, 1641, he married Marie Marguerie, daughter of François Marguerie, father and Marthe Romain of the parish of Saint-Vincent de Rouen in Normandy. She was the sister of his coureur de bois companion, who was also an interpreter, François Marguerie husband of Louise Cloutier.
Jacques and Marie had the following children:
François, baptized the July 3, 1642.
Madeleine, born on September 2, 1645
Marguerite, born on August 26, 1649
He lived in Trois-Rivières even before the official founding of this community and until his death. He died accidentally on the 10th (or 14th) of August 1651.
In the history of Québec, one also discovers his name because one of the earliest inventories of property that was drawn up after his death and which testifies to the customs of the “habitants” of New France in the early years of the colony.
His son Joseph François Hertel is known as a hero of the colony.
In 1652, his widow Marie Marguerite married Quentin Moral of Saint-Quentin. Marie died and was buried on November 26, 1700.
