Mathurine Goard was born about 1648 in the parish of Saint-Sulpice in the faubourg Saint-Germain-des-Prés section of Paris, the daughter of Gilles Goard and Catherine Léger. She left for Canada in 1666 at about age 18 and is listed in the 1667 census as a fille à marier ("marriageable girl"), living with the Congrégation Notre-Dame at the Mason Saint-Ange in Montréal.
On 31 May 1667, Mathurine married Louis Marie dit Sainte-Marie in Montréal. She signed the marriage contract drawn up 21 May by notary Basset, but her husband could not. Louis was born about 1634 in the parish of Saint-Symphorien in Tours, Touraine, the son of Louis Marie and Marguerite Peigné. He arrived in Canada 17 August 1665 as a soldier with the La Varenne Company of the Carignan Regiment. Louis and Mathurine settled at Montréal, where son Michel-Sidrac was baptized 12 April 1668, followed by Marie-Catherine (05 February 1670), Antoine (25 January 1672) and François (10 February 1674). Angélique-Marie was baptized 06 September 1676, followed by Marie on 07 October 1678. François died some time before the 1681 census, most likely before 19 April 1681, when another son named Francois was baptized at Montréal. Antoinette was baptized 28 February 1683, followed by Marie-Anne (11 February, buried 13 February 1685), Marguerite (27 March 1686) and Gabriel (02 June 1688).
Sadly, Gabriel was buried 09 April 1692 at Montréal.
Louis Marie dit Sainte-Marie was buried 02 December 1702 at Montréal. Mathurine Goard died at the Hôtel-Dieu and was buried 09 December 1720 at Montréal.
