HAMEL - from the Germanic 'haim' which means 'home, hearth'. Or, diminutive of the old French 'ham' which means 'small village' and designates a group of isolated dwellings (a hamlet). 1) Jean Hamel was born around 1652 in St-Aubin d'Avremesnil, Normandy, Seine-Maritime, France. Son of Charles Hamel and Judith Auvray, he married Marie-Charlotte-Christine Gaudry-Bourbonnière, daughter of Nicolas and Agnès Morin, on February 16, 1677 in Quebec. From this union were born 12 children. Arrived in the country in 1662 accompanied by his parents, his brother Charles, his uncle Jean and his aunt Marie Auvray, he settled in Lotbinière. In 1681, he was a farmer in Lotbinière and owned 2 guns, 6 cattle and 23 acres of land. The date of his death, which occurred before July 7, 1707, remains unknown. 2) Charles Hamel Charles Hamel was born between 1624 and 1627, in Saint-Aubin d'Avremesnil, in Dieppe in Normandy. He is the son of François Hamel, the name of the mother not appearing on any document. He probably arrived in New France in 1656 with his brother Jean. Around 1650, he married in Avremesnil, Judith Auvray who would not come to Canada. From this union was born in France, in 1652, a son named Jean who will make the crossing with his father. On June 19, 1656, he married Catherine Le Maistre with whom he had another son, Charles, born in 1659. In 1662, the family settled on the Côte Saint-Michel in the seigneury of Sillery, where the father receives an area of sixty acres of land from the Jesuits, to add another fifty acres in 1663. He will therefore carry out several other transactions to acquire other land. The eldest Jean married on February 16, 1677 Christine-Charlotte Gaudry, daughter of Nicolas and Agnès Morin. The couple has thirteen children, seven daughters and six sons, of whom only one, Charles-Joseph will ensure the male descendants. We do not know the exact date of death of the ancestor Charles and his second wife. Photos of three little girls Hamel and Guy Hamel and his son Édouard
