Fille à Marier per Gagné for David D9:

Marguerite Gaulin was baptized 14 May 1627 in Saint-Martin-du-Vieux-Bellême (arrondissement of Mortagne, diocese of Sées), Perche, the daughter of Vincent Gaulin and Marie Bonnemer. Her godparents were Martin Messot and Anne Bouton. Marguerite is the twin sister of Pierre Gaulin, who married Fille du Roi Jacqueline Lauvergnat and is the sister of François Gaulin, who married fille à marier Marie Rocheron. Marguerite arrived in Canada in 1654.

On 13 September 1654, Marguerite married Jean Crête in the chapel of the seigneurial manor of Beauport, though the act is recorded in the registers of Notre-Dame de Québec. Though no marriage contract has been found for this couple, it is known that Marguerite could not sign her name, but her husband could.

A master carriage maker, Jean was baptized between 08 and 23 November 1626 in the parish of Saint-Aubin in Tourouvre (arrondissement of Mortagne), Perche, the third of four children (and only son) of Antoine Crête or Creste and Jeanne Legrand, who were married 29 October 1619 in Tourouvre by Father Guillaume Loyseau. His godparents were Sébastien Legrand (Jeanne's brother, son of Noël) and Marie Creste (wife of Jean Bouchigny), representing Agnes Legrand. His father, the son of carriage maker Jehan Creste' and Marguerite Chaudon, was born 22 November 1592 and himself worked as a carriage maker in the hamlet of "Les Boullais" in the parish of Tourouvre. His mother was born 15 April 1595 in Tourouvre, the daughter of merchant Noël Legrand and Suzanne Loyseau. After her death, Antoine Crête married Martine Pignart about 1638.

Jean Crête enlisted to go to Canada on 18 March 1649 at Tourouvre. Notary Choiseau drew up the contract on behalf of Antoine Merry, acting as agent for Michel Le Neuf, Sieur du Hérisson of Trois-Rivières. With his father present as a witness, Jean enlisted for three years at the salary of 80 lives per year. After arriving in New France, Jean spent his three years of indenture at Trois-Rivières before moving to Beauport. On 11 August 1654 (notary Badeau), Jean bought a lot in the Bourg de Fargy section of Beauport. In 1660, he bought part of the arrière-fief of Dubuisson from Claude Guyon, husband of filleà marier Catherine Colin.

Jean and Marguerite had ten children. Louis was baptized 20 May 1656 at Québec City, followed by Marie (10 October 1657), Marguerite (20 April 1659), Françoise (01 August 1660) and a second Marguerite (01 April 1663). The first Marguerite was buried 16 May 1663 at Québec City. Son Jean was baptized at Québec City 23 April 1664. Named for his father, he would follow in the same profession, becoming a master carriage maker. Joseph was baptized 12 May 1666 at Québec City, though the family can be found at Beauport in that year's census, as well as in the 1667 and 1681 censuses. The remaining children were all born at Beauport. Marie was baptized at Québec City 18 February 1668, followed by Louise (10 August 1670) and Pierre (21 August 1671). Daughter Louise died some time before the 1681 census, 20-year-old Jean died 04 November 1684 and was buried the next day at Beauport and Joseph died and was buried 20 January 1689.

Marguerite Gaulin died 15 January 1703 and was buried the same day at Beauport, most likely a victim of the smallpox epidemic that may have killed one quarter of the population of Québec City that year. Notary Duprac drew up an inventory of the marital assets on 17 April of the same year. Further proof of Marguerite's probable smallpox infection comes on 18 April 1703, when Jean acknowledged that daughter Marie and her husband Jean Lefebvre spent 55 livres 5 sols for Marguerite's food and care during her illness. Jean Crête died 04 March 1717 at Beauport, where he was buried the next day.
