Bérubé states that Jean Neveu is bigamous.
Fille à Marier per Gagné for Lovina L8:
Anne Ledet or Léodet was born about 1631 in Angoulins (arrondissement and diocese of La Rochelle), Aunis, the daughter of Nicolas Ledet and Isabelle Pineau. She came to New France in 1652.
On 28 January 1653, Anne married
Jean Neveu or Nepveu in Québec City. No marriage contract has been found for this couple and it is not known if either spouse could sign their names. A mason, Jean is the son of Jacques Neveu or Nepveu from Saint-Georges-de-Montaigu (arrondissement of La Roche-sur-Yon, diocese of Luçon), Poitou. He enlisted to go to Canada on 10 June 1645 at La Rochelle. Jean and Anne had two children. Daughter
Barbe was baptized 03 December 1653 in Québec City, followed by Suzanne, who was baptized 11 October 1655 in Sillery.
Jette claims that Jean Neveu or Nepveu died some time before 02 September 1657, when Anne remarried, but this is not the case. The remarriage was the result of the only other thing that could dissolve a marriage in New France: bigamy. It was discovered that Jean had a wife that he had left in France and he was expelled from the colony and forced to return to France.
On 02 September 1657, Anne married Gilles Pinel in Québec City. No marriage contract has been found for this union, but it is known that Anne's second husband could not sign his name. A twin, Gilles was baptized 28 February 1635 in the parish of Sainte-Marguerite in La Rochelle, Aunis, the third of five children of carpenter and longsawyer Nicolas Pine! and Madeleine Maraud, who were married 29 September 1630 in Sainte-Marguerite de La Rochelle. He is the brother of Pierre Pinel, who married filleà marier Charlotte Fougerat. Gilles two younger siblings and his twin Pierre died in France.
Gilles' mother is the daughter of Mathieu Maraud and Jeanne Gay from Bourgneuf (arrondissement and diocese of La Rochelle), Aunis. His father is the son of Jean Pinel and Thomasse de La Haye from Campagnolles (arrondissement of Vire, diocese of Coutances), Normandy. The elder Pinel enlisted at La Rochelle on 05 April 1645 with Emmanuel Le Borgne (agent of of Charles de Menou d'Aulnay) to go to Port-Royal, Acadia for three years, apparently without his family. He next appears at Québec City on 16 September 1650, when notary Audouart drew up an act whereby Anne Gasnier (widow of Jacques Clément, Sieur du Vault et de Monceaux) leased him her house and land at Cap Rouge (Sillery). He had apparently returned to La Rochelle at the end of his three-year contract and then came to Canada with Gilles and Pierre, but his wife was still in La Rochelle on 30 June 1651, when she bought some merchandise to send to Canada aboard the ship Saint-Joseph. It is possible that she came to Canada on the same ship. On 23 January 1652, Nicolas Pinel received a land grant at Sillery from the Jesuits, but seems to have remained on his other land after seigneur Louis de Lauzon assured the safety of the colonists there. Nicolas Pinel died from wounds sustained from an Iroquois musket and was buried 18 September 1655 at Notre-Dame de Québec. Gilles and younger brother Pierre continued to cultivate their father's land and Gilles also worked as a Cooper.
Anne and Gilles had nine children. Daughter Catherine was baptized 10 April 1658 at Québec City followed by Françoise (born about 1660) and Marie-Madeleine (about 1662). François-Xavier was baptized 15 January 1664 at Sillery, followed by Elisabeth-Ursule on 29 June 1666. The family can be found in the 1666 and 1667 censuses at the Côte Saint-Ignace in Sillery. Guillaume was baptized there on 16 January 1669, followed by Anne on 27 July 1671. Nicolas was born at Neuville and baptized 30 November 1673 at Québec City, followed by Jean, born at Neuville 15 November and baptized at Québec City 17 November 1675. The 1681 census finds the family at Neuville.
Gilles Pinel was buried 15 January 1700 at Neuville. Anne Ledet or Léodet was buried 14 December 1700 at Neuville.
