VACHON - contraction of Vacheron, the nickname given to a cow breeder. Paul Vachon was born around 1630 in La Copechagnière, Vendée, France. Son of Vincent Vachon and Sapience Rabaud, he married Marguerite Langlois, daughter of Noël and Françoise Garnier, on October 22, 1653 in Quebec. The couple have 12 children. Literate, this mason who arrived in 1650 became a notary for the seigneuries of Notre-Dame-des-Anges, Beauport, Beaupré and Île d’Orléans where he lived, for nearly 40 years. His son is the first priest born in the colony. In 1681, he owned 2 rifles, 1 pistol, 13 cattle and 35 acres of land. He died on June 24, 1703 of smallpox which took away his whole family and was buried the next day in Beauport.
