Fille à Marier per Gagné for David D8:
Catherine Lotier was born about 1644 in the parish of Saint-Sulpice in the faubourg Saint-Germain section of Paris, the daughter of master painter Adrien Lotier and Anne Desdames who lived on the Rue Sainte-Marguerite. She lost her father before leaving for Canada in 1659. Catherine arrived in Montral on 29 September 1659 aboard the Saint-André, one of the filles à marier brought over by Jeanne Mance. On 11 November 1659, she was a witness at the marriage contract of fellow filleà marier Louise-Thérèse-Marie Lebreuil.
On 25 November 1659, Catherine married Adrien Léger in Montréal. She signed the marriage contract drawn up 29 October by notary Basset, but it is not known if her husband could. Andrien was born about 1631 in Sainte-Marguerite-sur-Duclair (arrondissement and archdiocese of Rouen), Normandy, the son of Louis Leger and Perrette Lacaille. Before leaving for Canada in 1646, Adrien resided in Saint-Germain-d'Arcé (arrondissement of La Flèche, diocese of Angers), Anjou. He and Catherine had one child, daughter Marie, who was baptized 30 October 1660 in Montréal.
Adrien Leger died 11 January 1661 when he was crushed by a falling tree at the Pointe Saint-Charles in Montréal. On 08 August 1661, Catherine married Mathurin Jousset dit Laloire in Montreal. She signed the marriage contract drawn up 29 May by notary Basset (she signed her name "Lotier" and "Lotière" on various occasions), but her husband could not. Mathurin was born about 1633 in the parish of Saint-Germain-d'Arcé (arrondissement of La Flèche, diocese of Angers), Anjou, the son of Mathurin Jousset and Antoinette Poyère or Marie Caillaux. He enlisted to go to Canada on 02 May 1653 in La Flèche (notary La Fousse) and arrived in Montréal on 16 November with the Grande Recrue. He enlisted as a land-clearer with annual wages of 75 lives. Before departing aboard the Saint-Nicolas, Mathurin acknowledged receiving 120 lives in advance wages.
Catherine and Mathurin had 12 children. Daughter Louise was baptized at Montréal 17 August 1662, followed by Catherine, who was baptized 03 July but buried 13 August 1664. Another Catherine was baptized 31 August 1665, followed by André, who was baptized 10 September but buried 17 October 1667. Son Jean was baptized at Montréal on 13 November 1668, followed by Julien on 07 March 1672. Sadly, Jean was buried 24 February 1673. Jeanne was baptized 30 March 1674 at Montréal, followed by Jean-Baptiste (07 June 1676) and Charles (baptized 12, buried 27 November 1678). Daughter Anne was baptized at Montréal 06 April 1680, followed by Agathe (27 September 1682) and Élisabeth (baptized 08, buried 14 May 1684. Unfortunately, ten-year-old Anne was buried 04 February 1691 at Montréal. Daughters Catherine and Agathe became nuns with the Congrégation Notre-Dame. Out of these 12 children, only two (Louise and Jeanne) married.
In 1663, Mathurin Jousset dit Laloire was a soldier in the 18th squadron of the Sainte-Famille militia in Montral. He died at the Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal and was buried 30 June 1705 in Montréal. Catherine Lotier was buried at Montréal on 03 September 1705.
