It was not until August 1647, after a two-year absence, that Maisonneuve returned to Montréal Island, bringing with him several marriageable young women.[101] Not three months after Maisonneuve’s return, the settlement celebrated the first marriage since its founding. On the third day of November 1647, Françoise Fafard married Mathurin Meunier in the little chapel inside the fort. Françoise was the first of many women to come to Ville-Marie intending to marry and settle in the colony. Perhaps it was a decision made easier because her older brother Bertrand had come to New France ten years earlier, in 1637, and had established himself at Trois-Rivières.[102]

A year after her marriage in the fall of 1647, Françoise Fafard gave birth to the couple’s first child, a daughter they named Barbe, on November 24, 1648. Sadly, this little girl died nine days later, and her parents laid her to rest in the little cemetery outside the fort. The following year, on December 3, 1649, Françoise gave birth to twin boys. Charles, one twin, lived eighteen days before he died and was buried on December 21, 1649. His brother Mathurin lived two months, dying on February 27, 1650. Having buried three children at Ville-Marie, Françoise and Mathurin decided this settlement was not the place for them. When their fourth child was born, they were living in Trois-Rivières. By 1653, the family was living in Québec.[114]

One of the “Filles Á Marier” for David D8:

Françoise Fafard was born about 1622 in the parish of Saint-Jean-Baptiste et Saint-Patrice in Argences (arrondissement of Caen, diocese of Bayeux), Normandy, the daughter of Jean Fafard and Élisabeth Tibou. She is the half-sister of Bertrand Fafard, who married Marie Sédilot in 1640 and François Fafard, who married fille à marier Marie Richard. Françoise arrived in New France in 1647, probably brought over by Maisonneuve on his return from France.

On 03 November 1647, Françoise married Mathurin Meunier in Montréal. This was the first mariage celebrated at Montréal (Ville-Marie). Though no marriage contract has been found for this couple, it is known that Françoise could not sign her name, but her husband could. A peat worker, Mathurin was born about 1619 in Clermont-Créans (arrondissement of La Flèche, diocese of Le Mans), Maine, the son of René Meunier and Marie Leroux. He enlisted to go to Canada on 20 April 1644 at La Rochelle.

Françoise and Mathurin had nine children. Barbe was baptized 24 November 1648 at Montréal, but died and was buried 03 December of the same year. Twins Mathurin and Charles were born and baptized 03 December 1649, though Charles died 18 days later, while Mathurin survived two months, dying 27 February 1650. Son Jean was baptized 08 January 1651 at Trois-Rivières. The family had apparently decided to leave Montréal, for the next three children were baptized at Québec City: Françoise (17 September 1653), Elisabeth (13 March 1656) and Marguerite (07 August 1659). A second son named Mathurin was born 08 December 1662 at Château-Richer, where he was baptized four days later. Son François was born about 1664, most likely at Château-Richer, where thefamily can be found in the 1666 and 1667 censuses. Son Jean married Fille du Roi Marguerite Housseau.

Mathurin Meunier died at Château-Richer some time between 08 October 1676 and the 1681 census. Françoise Fafard died 13 January 1702 at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, where she was buried the next day.
