Marie Bernard, martriarch of the Landry family in Acadie 1719
On January 11, 1719, Marie Bernard died in Annapolis Royal. The surviving registers of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Parish at Port-Royal also indicate that she was the wife of René Landry le Jeune. Marie is considered therefore a matriarch of the Landry family in Acadie. Many Landry descendants have her as an ancestor.
In Acadian communities, the sense of family connections and the awareness of our lineage is a source of great pride. During World Acadian Congresses, family reunions are very popular where distant cousins from every region of the Acadian diaspora can meet. Most people feel as if they are being reunited with family. The next World Acadian Congress will be in 2024.
Despite being Deported, Acadian families have maintained this feeling of connection throughout the centuries. It is the greatest source of strength for the survival of Acadian culture to this day.
The Port Royal Journal is a series dedicated to revealing the stories of everyday life in the community.
