Toussaint, Marie-Jeanne

Marie-Jeanne Toussaint was born about 1652, though her origins in France are unknown. She came to Canada in 1670, at about age 18.

On 11 October 1670, Jeanne entered into a one-year service contract with Madeleine de Chavigny at Cap-de-la-Madeleine. About 1672, she married Noël Carpenter at Cap-de-la-Madeleine or Champlain. Though no marriage contract has been found, it is known that Marie-Jeanne could not sign her name, but her husband could. Noël was born about 1643, of unknown origins. He can be found in the 1666 census living with Pierre Lefebvre at Trois-Rivières. Noël and Marie-Jeanne settled at Cap-de-la-Madeleine, where daughter Marie-Madeleine was born in 1673, followed by Marie-Jeanne (baptized 28 November 1676) and Étienne (born end of 1678 or beginning of 1679). The family then moved to Champlain, where Médard was baptized 06 August 1681, followed by Marie-Marguerite (04 March1684) and Marie-Antoinette (26 January 1686). Marie-Thérèse was bastized at Champlain 03 July 1689, followed by Anne-Céleste (18 June 1691), Jacques (14 April 1694) and Noël (20 January 1697).

Marie-Jeanne Toussaint died 16 December 1708 and was buried the next day at Champlain. Noël Carpenter died 25 January 1728 and was buried the next day at Champlain
