Owner of the Poirier home in Poirierville passed down from Hubert Poirier. The house was built over 200 years ago by Val’s ancestors and has been continuously occupied by the family since then.

Valma Poirier, 88, of Poirierville, Richmond County, died peacefully at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, on Saturday, April 25, 2009.
Born in Poirierville, he was the son of the late Amedee and Rose (MacDonald) Poirier.
Valma was a member of St. Hyacinthe parish in D'Escousse, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 150, Arichat, and a former member of Knights of Columbus.
Valma joined the Armed Forces at a very young age and served overseas during the Second World War.
He later married Anita Fougère and moved to Sydney, where he owned and operated a general store for many years.
Valma and Anita returned to Poirierville to care for his aging parents. He worked at N.S. Power and various construction jobs until he retired. Upon retiring Valma became an active member of the Canadian Cancer Society and spent over 20 years as a volunteer for the Terry Fox Run and other Cancer Society fundraising events.
He was predeceased by his wife, Anita and nephew, Gary.
He is survived by two sisters, Zena Poirier, D'Escousse, and Ruth Rance, Ottawa; many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at St. Hyacinthe visitation room, D'Escousse, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday, April 30, 2009. Mass to celebrate his life will be at 11 a.m., Friday, May 1, 2009, from St. Hyacinthe Catholic Church, D'Escousse, with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery. Members of Legion Branch 150 are requested to meet at 10:30 a.m. the morning of the funeral mass.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Veteran's Comfort Fund or the D'Escousse Cemetery Fund.
Funeral is under the compassionate care and direction of I.M.L. Funeral Home, Petit de Grat.
